General Ye Ting: The New Fourth Army Legend and the Family Story Behind the Wannan Incident

Ye Ting (1896–1946), a native of Huizhou, Guangdong, was a renowned Chinese military leader and one of the founders of the People's Liberation Army. He studied in Japan, joined the Tongmenghui, and later pursued military training in Europe. During the Northern Expedition, he led the "Ye Ting Independent Regiment" to multiple victories, earning the title "Iron Army." He also participated in the Nanchang Uprising and Guangzhou Uprising. During the Anti-Japanese War, he served as the commander of the New Fourth Army. After the Wannan Incident, he was detained by the Kuomintang for five years. In 1946, after his release, he tragically died in a plane crash alongside his wife, Li Xiuwen, and two children.Ye Ting and Li Xiuwen had nine children. Their eldest son, Ye Zhengda, became a lieutenant general and aviation expert; second son, Ye Zhengming, was a missile expert; fourth son, Ye Huaming, founded Shenzhen SED Group; and seventh son, Ye Zhengguang, became an environmental entrepreneur. Other children also excelled in fields such as technology and arts, continuing their family’s legacy of service to the nation.

Ye Ting

Ye Ting was a Chinese military officer and figure who played a key role in the Northern Expedition to reunify China after the 1911 Revolution. After serving with the Kuomintang, Ye later joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Ye Zhengda

Ye Zhengda was a Chinese aircraft designer and lieutenant general of the People's Liberation Army Air Force. He was also an adjunct professor and senior engineer at Northwestern Polytechnical University. He was a member of the 10th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party and a delegate to the 5th National People's Congress.

He Zizhen was a Chinese soldier, revolutionary, and politician who was the third wife of Chairman Mao Zedong from 1928 to 1937 and participated in the Long March.

Li Peng

Li Peng was a Chinese politician who served as the 4th premier of China from 1987 to 1998, and as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislative body, from 1998 to 2003. For much of the 1990s Li was ranked second in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) hierarchy behind then CCP General Secretary Jiang Zemin. He retained his seat on the CCP Politburo Standing Committee until his retirement in 2002.

Li Xiaopeng

Li Xiaopeng is a Chinese businessman and politician, who is serving as the Minister of Transport. He is the former chief executive of China Huaneng Group, a power generation company. He was also Governor of Shanxi between 2012 and 2016. As the son of former Chinese Premier Li Peng, he is a prominent member of the faction known in Chinese politics as the princelings.

Li Xiaolin

Li Xiaolin is a Chinese businesswoman, currently serving as vice-president of the China Datang Corporation, a state-owned power generation enterprise. She is the former CEO of China Power International Development. She is the only daughter of former Chinese Premier Li Peng and his wife Zhu Lin. She was trained as a power generation engineer at Tsinghua University.
