Bo Yibo, a native of Dingxiang, Shanxi Province, was an early participant in China’s labor movement and the Anti-Japanese War, playing a key role during the founding period of the Chinese Communist Party. Bo held positions such as Deputy Director of the Finance and Economics Committee of the Government Administration Council and Vice Premier of the State Council, leading national economic construction and fiscal policies. During the Great Leap Forward, he was labeled as a member of an anti-party group. After being rehabilitated in 1978, he resumed his position as Vice Premier of the State Council. Bo Yibo was one of the CCP’s Eight Elders.
Li Ruming, Bo Yibo’s first wife, was married to Bo in 1926 under parental arrangement when she was not yet 13 years old, and Bo was 18. They divorced in 1945 and had one daughter, Bo Xiying.
Hu Ming, Bo Yibo’s second wife, originally named Li Qiongying, worked as Bo’s secretary. They married in 1945. During the Cultural Revolution, she committed suicide at the age of 48. Together, they had two daughters and four sons, including Bo Xilai.
Bo Xiyong, Bo Yibo’s eldest son, adopted the alias Li Xueming and served as an Executive Director and Deputy General Manager of China Everbright Group.
Bo Xilai, Bo Yibo’s second son, held positions including Mayor of Dalian, Secretary of the Liaoning Provincial Party Committee, Minister of Commerce, and Party Secretary of Chongqing. While in Chongqing, he promoted the Red Song movement, cultural revival, and anti-corruption campaigns. Bo Xilai was investigated following the Wang Lijun incident and cases involving his wife Gu Kailai. In 2012, he was dismissed from office and expelled from the Party. In 2013, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for bribery, embezzlement, and abuse of power.
Bo Xicheng, Bo Yibo’s third son, is Vice President of the China Association for Poverty Alleviation and Development, Director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, Chairman of the Beijing Xingda Education Foundation, Chairman of Beijing Liuhexing Hotel Management Company, and an Independent Director of CITIC Securities.
Bo Xining, Bo Yibo’s fourth son, serves as Chairman of Beijing Liuhexing Group Co., Ltd.
Bo Xiying, Bo Yibo’s eldest daughter, originally named Bo Qisheng, served as Director-General of the Department of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her husband was Zheng Yaowen, a former Chinese ambassador to Denmark.
Bo Jieying, Bo Yibo’s second daughter, is a biochemistry PhD graduate from the United States. She served as Vice President of the International Exchange and Cooperation Center of China’s Ministry of Health.
Bo Xiaoying, Bo Yibo’s third daughter, is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Peking University.
Li Danyu, Bo Xilai’s first wife, is a military doctor at the General Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army and the daughter of Li Xuefeng. They married in 1976 and had a son, Bo Wangzhi, later renamed Li Wangzhi, in 1977. The couple divorced in 1984.
Gu Kailai, Bo Xilai’s second wife, is the daughter of CCP elder Gu Jingsheng. Gu was a lawyer and businesswoman who founded a law firm and provided legal services to several international companies. In 2012, she was investigated for her involvement in the death of British businessman Neil Heywood. The same year, she was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. Her case became a key trigger in the Bo Xilai scandal.
Bo Guagua, born Bo Jinggua, is the son of Bo Xilai and Gu Kailai. He studied politics and philosophy at Balliol College, Oxford, but was reportedly asked to leave after two years due to poor performance. He later transferred to the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. In July 2013, he began studying at Columbia Law School. He was rumored to have been in a relationship with Chen Xiaodan, granddaughter of Chen Yun and daughter of Chen Yuan.
Li Wangzhi, originally named Bo Wangzhi, is the son of Bo Xilai and Li Danyu. After his parents’ divorce, he changed his name to Li Wangzhi. He is a partner at He Foundation, a research fellow at the Research Committee of the Philanthropy, Sports, and Law Research Center at Peking University, and a board member of the Peking University Entrepreneur Club.
Xu Huiyu, the granddaughter of Xu Wenzheng, the founder of Luodong Bo’ai Hospital in Taiwan, recently married Bo Guagua, drawing widespread attention.
