Ling Jihua, born in 1956 in Pinglu County, Shanxi Province, is a member of the Chinese Communist Party and holds an MBA from Hunan University. He once served as Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of the United Front Work Department, and Vice Chairman of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In 2014, Ling was investigated for serious disciplinary violations. The following year, he was expelled from the Party and public office ("shuang kai") and sentenced to life imprisonment for bribery, illegally obtaining state secrets, and abuse of power.
Ling's wife, Gu Liping, born in 1957, was a former Beijing Procuratorate employee and executive of several IT companies. She was detained in 2014 after Ling’s downfall. Their son, Ling Gu, born in 1988, died in 2012 in a high-profile Ferrari crash, which attracted significant public attention.
Ling's family background is notable, with his father, Linghu Ye, serving as a grassroots cadre in Shanxi. The family includes five siblings: the eldest brother, Ling Fangzhen, second brother, Ling Zhengce, third sister, Linghu Luxian, and youngest brother, Ling Wancheng. Ling Fangzhen, a retired naval soldier, tragically died in an accident in 1977. Both Ling Zhengce and Ling Wancheng were investigated for disciplinary violations. Linghu Luxian, a doctor, served as Vice President of Yuncheng Central Hospital.
Other family members, including Gu Liping's brother Gu Yuanxu, sister-in-law Li Ping, and relative Luo Fanghua, were also implicated following Ling Jihua's fall from power. The family's extensive involvement in scandals has significantly tarnished their legacy.
